Tucson Strip Clubs: Fiesta chooses UA president to be executive director

PHOENIX – The troubled Fiesta Bowl has hired University of Arizona President Robert Shelton as executive director to replace the ousted John Junker.
Shelton, who held the top position at the Tucson university for five years, is a member of the presidential oversight committee for the Bowl Championship Series, the system that determines major college football’s national champion.
The BCS recently fined the bowl $1 million but allowed the event to remain as one of its four games.
Junker was fired earlier this year after an internal investigation uncovered apparently illegal campaign contributions by staff and lavish spending by him on parties and a night at a strip club.

Tucson Strip Clubs: Fiesta hires UA president as executive director

Junker was fired earlier this year after an internal investigation uncovered apparently illegal campaign contributions by staff and lavish spending by him on parties and a night at a strip club.
Shelton, 62, agreed to a four-year contract with a base salary of $455,000 and incentives. Junker had an annual salary of about $600,000 plus a substantial list of perks.
“The Fiesta Bowl is an Arizona treasure, and as a native Arizonan I am excited about the opportunity to lead this wonderful organization,” Shelton said in the news release announcing his hiring. “I have spent my entire career in higher education and I care passionately about UA. But there always comes a point in life where you feel that it is time to try something new. I am looking forward to helping the bowl rebuild and achieve even greater heights.”

The probe also uncovered lavish spending, including $33,000 for a birthday bash for Junker in Pebble Beach, Calif., $13,000 for a wedding for Junker’s top aide and even a $1,200 trip to a Phoenix strip club.

Tucson Strip Clubs: War, What Is It Good For? Three Points!

… When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” – Corinthians 13:11
Last night, I visited the BBC News website for the first time in a week. Imagine my surprise on learning that, while I was busy hanging out with strippers and watching 80s boy-band stars in Vegas, I missed the entire federal government almost being shut down.
That insulation from reality is both a problem and a selling-point for this town: what doesn’t happen in Vegas stays outside Vegas.
And so it was with some interest that, during my news catch-up, I spotted the headline on PBS’s Idea Lab: “Why Are Newsrooms Resistant to Creating Newsgames?“ In a well-argued post, Chris O’Brien outlines various reasons why news organisations should explore ways to include elements of videogaming into their reporting.

Tiger Woods should be very unhappy that Johnny Miller recently compared him to Mike Tyson. Buster Douglas should be absolutely miserable about it.
Miller equated Douglas’ shocking 1990 upset of Tyson to Woods’ career-hobbling marital infidelities. Whatever his shortcomings as a boxer, Douglas did hold the heavyweight crown for eight months. He deserves better than to be equated with Woods’ libido and the assorted strippers who blabbed about him.
The only rational explanation for the analogy is that Miller watched “The Hangover” recently and couldn’t get the scenes about Tyson’s tiger out of his mind. Otherwise, the connection seems unaccountable. Or the NBC analyst thinks th …

Tucson Strip Clubs: Tucson strip club’s liquor license transferred to new owner

Tucson strip club’s liquor license transferred
By Dale Quinn, Arizona Daily Star Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Friday, February 4, 2011 11:59 am
The Arizona State Liquor Board approved a license transfer for a Tucson strip club that was the site of two deadly shootings in 2009.
The board voted 7-0 Thursday to transfer The Candy Store’s license from previous owner Steven M. Carringer to Corey D. Owens, who will operate the club through a corporation called Whitefeather Ventures LLC.
At a hearing in December, the liquor board delayed approving The Candy Store’s license transfer due to public opposition of the application and because the City Council recommended it not be approved.
Last year, the strip club’s owner agreed to pay two fines totaling $90,000 for violations that included repeated acts of violence, selling or using drugs on the premises and one count of a prohibited sex act, according to the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control.
